tips to prevent winter blahs

By now, all of us should be comfortable with the fact that being Canadian means having to deal with the long, cold, dark winter months. Granted, it’s a small price to pay to live in such a beautiful, open and free society. But, none the less, the winter months can really weigh on people. Some more than others.Fatigue, depression, anxiety…these symptoms are real, and they can be a stubborn obstacle when trying to stay active and healthy from December to March. Here are 4 tips to help you beat the winter blahs:

4. Make things brighter

The body craves daylight. We’re the battery and the sun is our charger. Without the proper amount of time spent under the sun’s UV light, our battery depletes. Sitting next to a Lightbox for 30 minutes a day can be just as effective as anti-depressant medication. Failing that, anything else you can do to help let the light in: open those blinds, trim back those tree branches, sit closer to windows.

3. Exercise

Walking for 35 minutes a day, 5 times a week. Or 60 minutes a day 3 times a week will help improve mild to moderate depression. Exercising under bright lights can improve mental health, social function and depressive symptoms. It’s about moving, being active and, when possible, doing it in bright, cheery conditions.

2. Get Outside

A lot of times, being outside in the cold Canadian elements is the last thing you want to do, but, it’s important! Go for a walk, play shinny, go snowboarding. Get out of the stuffy house and be outside. It can improve focus, reduce symptoms of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and lower stress. Besides, you’re Canadian! It’s a part of you!

1. Supplement

Vitamin D is known as the “sunlight hormone” because humans are designed to make Vitamin D by bare skin being exposed to the sun. When exposure to sunlight is limited, levels of Vitamin D are naturally lowered, eventually resulting in deficiency. So, in these dark days, we need to supplement. For proper function, the human body utilizes around 3000-5000 IU of Vitamin D per day. Fortunately, here at Hyperforme.com, we carry plenty of excellent products that will help you achieve those numbers, such as VITAMIN  D
